Marine Activity Centre - Update

Government of Nova Scotia gives $90,000 for Marine Activity Centre
The RNSYS is pleased to announce that the provincial government, through the Department of Health Protection and Promotion’s Recreation Facility Development (RFD) Program, will  ontribute $90,000 towards the construction of the Marine Activity Centre. The intent of the RFD Program is to increase and broaden sport and physical recreation opportunities for communities through the improvement of existing facilities and the development of new facilities. The awarding of this grant is a significant accomplishment for the RNSYS in its fund-raising efforts for the MAC, and we know that our membership will be encouraged by this show of confidence in our sail training objectives both for our members, and the sailing community at large. Members are reminded that is never too late to make a taxdeductible donation to the Marine Activity Centre, just click on the link on our website to download the donation form!

May 2009

 Demolition has begun!

 In terms of funding, we’ve been successful in getting funding commitments from our members totaling in the $140,000 range with between $40,000 and $50,000 having already been received. We believe there is additional membership support we can tap into. We have completed our Provincial Government grant application for 33% of the project cost and should hear of their decision the first week of May. We have also submitted an application for funding with Halifax Regional Municipality and hope to access funding from that source as well.

In terms of timelines, we expect demolition work on the existing building to commence in early April with construction of the new Marine Activity Centre to begin immediately thereafter. Build time is approximately four months.

Facility Summary
The Marine Activity Centre (MAC) we're planning to develop will provide a number of benefits to our club as follows:
•    The facility will allow for enhanced training facilities for child, youth, and adult sailors;
•    The facility will allow for improved race management for events such as Marblehead, Saint Pierre, etc;
•    The facility will better position us to win hosting opportunities for regional, national and international events; many of these being revenue generating opportunities for our club
•    History has shown robust sailing training provides a new membership stream/opportunity to our club;
•    Will assist in continuing to position us as the premier yacht club in the region.
