Marblehead to Halifax Ocean Race
July 3, 2007
Ladies and gentlemen get ready to set your sails. That was the theme delivered today July 3, 2007 at the Royal Nova Scotia Yacht Squadron (R.N.S.Y.S). Halifax Vice-Chair Robert Stoddard officially launched the 102 nd year of the Marblehead to Halifax Ocean Race on the waterfront of Halifax's historic yacht club.
The biennial race will begin Sunday July 8, 2007 from the Boston Yacht Club in Marblehead, Massachusetts. Participants will race approximately 360 nautical miles up the east coast and finish just off Chebucto Head in Halifax, Nova Scotia.
"We are proud to continue our long standing partnership with the Boston Yacht Club and bring the thrill of ocean racing to our shores," said George Chisholm, chair of the R.N.S.Y.S Halifax Organizing Committee. "This promises to be the largest fleet this race has ever had. We are looking forward to welcoming the sailors and their friends and families to Halifax."
The Marblehead to Halifax Ocean Race began in 1905 as a friendly competition but was formally established in 1939 by the two yacht clubs and made it a biannual event. Over the years the race has represented a strong partnership between two of the grandest yacht clubs in North America. The Boston Yacht Club, the third oldest club in the United States, and the R.N.S.Y.S, the oldest yacht club in North America, work together to bring this premier yachting event to the life.
The last race in 2005 attracted 125 boats, racing in 5 different divisions. Each year, over 20 trophies are awarded to different teams. Many special teams are celebrated, such as: fasted all female team, fasted double handed yacht, commodores challenge, and all the division and class winners. The majority of the yachts are expected to start arriving in Halifax July 10 and 11 th with the final prize presentations set to take place on Thursday July 12 th at 5pm.

Planning is underway to determine a suitable replacement for the RNSYS's Learn to Sail building. After receiving membership feedback at the
2006 AGM, the Marine Activity Centre Committee is working to develop the action plan that will guide the development of any new sail training facilities.
As part of this
process, an initial business plan was developed and presented at the AGM. This plan
discusses: program requirements, potential revenue sources, partnership opportunities and facility requirements. To download and read the whole document, click here. Note that the Committee is already working on a revised plan to present at the next general meeting.
Stay tuned to this space for regular updates as the project progresses. If you would like to get involved in the process, or desire further information, contact committee chair Steve Kempton via email.
